If you want the "full mmorpg experience" including all socializing and raiding, you will need to subscribe.

And honestly they are fun, though they have differing quality in writing. If you just want to experience eight semi-interactive star wars storylines in an mmorpg setting, the f2p trial will let you do that without issue. You have fewer character slots so you will have to pick-and-choose to play on multiple servers if you just want to see the storylines. You have the regular restrictions on things like money caps, auction house (GTN), etc. You are heavily restricted in group content (either having a limited amount of entries before needing to wait for a refresh, or outright not allowed to enter certain instances). Your class is not nickel and dimed for the purpose of completing those storylines. The story for the base game of all the classes are there. You can play through the base game (and now apparently Rise of the Hutt Cartel and Shadow of Revan expansions) as f2p.
